It is the ideal center for excursions, by mountain bike, even with pedal assistance and for trekking with “daisy” itineraries, that is, always leaving and returning “home” without ever following the same itinerary and exploring a new slice of territory every day .
Whatever the preferred practice, one feels the emotion of traveling on the ridges, along the ancient salt road which connected the Oltrepò and the sea.
The most interesting places in the area have a common toponymy of Carthaginian origin, because these lands were colonized by Hannibal during his expedition to Italy. Mount Lesima, for example, means “laesa manus”, i.e. wounded hand: in fact, on Mount Lesima Hannibal, who went up on patrol, fell from his horse and injured his hand.
The surroundings of the Capannette di Pey are also an ideal place for those who prefer peaceful walks, or placid naps on the meadows, or immersion in reading in the open air in the silence of nature.
Val Boreca is a small valley formed by the Boreca torrent, a tributary of the Trebbia, located in the heart of the Quattro provinces. It borders to the north with the Staffora valley (Lombardy), to the west with the Borbera valley (Piedmont), to the south with the upper Trebbia valley (Liguria), to the east again with the Trebbia valley (Emilia-Romagna). Surrounded by mountains such as Lesima (1,724 m), Alfeo (1,650 m), Tartago (1,688 m), Chiappo (1,699 m), Cavalmurone (1,670 m), Carmo (1,640 m) it is impervious and covered in woods. The Boreca valley represents, with its fifty-one square kilometres, the largest sub-basin of the Trebbia valley, after that, obviously, of the Aveto which remains undisputed, the most important tributary.
The Sentiero del Postino has always linked the five villages located in the upper part of the valley: Artana, Belnome, Pizzonero, Suzzi, Bogli. There is no road that connects them and the carriageways of the five villages start from three different areas. Today the villages have very few permanent residents because living there is not easy, far as they are from any service and meeting place. Despite this, they are treated in their poverty and simplicity, because descendants of emigrants who are fond of the land and their origins, they spend their weekends and free time there. It is also easy to meet people from the plains fleeing the city.
From Capannette di pei you reach the small town of Artana from which you can walk the path both in one direction and in the other. Our hotel organizes, for those who wish, especially for minors or not particularly expert walkers, excursions in the valley with an excursion guide, both on the postman’s tour and on other itineraries.
